  • COVID-19 is a respiratory infection caused by the strain of coronavirus known as SARS‑CoV‑2.
  • Health authorities identified the first case of COVID-19 in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, as transmitted from bats to humans. Subsequently, the WHO declared it a global pandemic in March 2020.
  • The Worldometers website reports more than 492 million total cases of COVID-19 worldwide, with over 6 million deaths at the time of writing.
  • COVID-19 spread is by close contact with infected cases, infected surfaces, or long distances by coughing, sneezing or speaking.
  • Common symptoms are cough, sore throat, change of taste and headaches. However, a person may not have symptoms to spread the virus.
  • Two classes of COVID-19 tests are available. The RAT kits can be easily performed at home and yield results within 15 minutes. In contrast, the PCR test is done in the laboratory and takes longer.
